PURPLE ART
Ralph Woods Biography.
Before devoting full time to photography, Ralph Woods developed a career in
advertising, holding the positions of art director and creative director at
Chicago advertising agencies working for major clients across the country.
It was there, working on advertising projects with some of Chicago’s best
photographers that he tapped into their knowledge, experience and variety of
styles to further his own abilities in photography, a manner of expression
he had grown to love.
For the past several years he has been concentrating on photographing
flowers, bringing a personal style to that genre using close up photography
combined with distinctive lighting and unusual perspectives that offer the
viewer a new way of seeing flowers. Although he does classic treatments at
times, he prefers getting in tight with a macro lens and then moving around
a plant to explore and uncover interesting relationships of elements not
represented in more classic floral compositions. He says, “the process feels
like I’m exploring a miniature landscape where I never quite know what I
will discover around the next turn. I love coming upon a beautiful scene
that only exists as potential in my camera’s viewfinder until it is made
into a fixed reality when I take the picture. Photography lets me capture
that scene to keep for myself or share it with others who weren’t there to
experience that magical moment.”
Ralph Woods is a member of the Illinois Artisans group, a jury-selected
group of artisans whose work is represented in Illinois Artisan stores
across the state. His prize winning work is also currently represented in
three Chicago area galleries.
